This is the age of youth. Let everything not strictly modern and up to date be done away with. Tear down all our old land marks to make way for progress. Discard anything which bears a date mark more than a year old. Speed is the word now. Gone are the days when our eyes would widen and astonished exclamations greet the news that Uncle John had taken his new car, and with a stiff tail wind and a down hill drag, actually done fifty two M. In fact most of the landmarks of that era have vanished and are forgotten. I am not one to deny the benefits of our modern age, but having had the privilege of living in “the dark ages”, as the children put it, I regret the passing of old landmarks and friends both mechanical and human. Bearing in mind the fate of the passenger pigeon which, beside being extinct numerically, has slipped from the memory of most of us, and the similar path which “Old Dobbin” is taking, it has occurred to me more and more often of late that I should set down, before time has dimmed my memory too greatly, the chronicle of an old and valued mechanical friend.
1927 Ford Model T Touring (Fifteen-Millionth Ford)
The first Ford Motor Co. It had a two-cylinder, eighthorsepower engine, wooden wheels, a two forward speed transmission and was not the Model A introduced as a successor to the Model T. The Model T still had wooden wheels, but a substantial four-cylinder engine, a separate coil for each cylinder spark plug, and no electric starter. It also had electric lights powered by a magneto.
Ford pioneered the use of high-strength alloy steel, and cast-off Model T rear axles were much favored as a source of steel for farm repair work.

When oil prices dropped in the early 20th century, making gasoline more affordable, Ford phased out the hemp option. Ford kept prices low by sticking to a single product. By , the moving assembly line made it possible to produce thousands of cars every week and by , workers at the River Rouge Ford plant in Dearborn, Michigan could cast more than 10, Model T cylinder blocks in a day.
But by the s, many Americans wanted more than just a sturdy, affordable car. They wanted style for many years, the Model T famously came in just one color: black , speed and luxury too.

Although automobiles had been produced from the s , until the Model T was introduced in , they were mostly scarce, expensive, and often unreliable.
Positioned as reliable, easily maintained, mass-market transportation, the Model T was a great success.
The Model T was the first mass-produced car. The term “mass production” dates from Ford’s article of that title in the thirteenth edition () of the Encyclopaedia.
Priced so that the average American could afford it, the Model T was sold from until In the early s, car dealers would try to create publicity for their new automobiles by hosting car races. Since Old Liz looked the worse for wear, as it was unpainted and lacked a hood, many spectators compared Old Liz to a tin can. By the start of the race, the car had the new nickname of “Tin Lizzie. But to everyone’s surprise, Tin Lizzie won the race.
Having beaten even the most expensive other cars available at the time, Tin Lizzie proved both the durability and speed of the Model T. Tin Lizzie’s surprise win was reported in newspapers across the country, leading to the use of the nickname “Tin Lizzie” for all Model T cars. The car also had a couple of other nicknames—”Leaping Lena” and “flivver”—but it was the Tin Lizzie moniker that stuck.

The Ford Model T. Accordingly, the car was the first to be built in very large numbers on an assembly line, rather than each example being put together individually a much more time-consuming and labour-intensive process. Therefore these Fords were assembled on a moving line, using sets of parts that were fully interchangeable between the cars being built, resulting in rapid production and lower costs.
For the record, it is appreciated that the first mass-produced car to be built on an assembly line was in fact the Curved Dash Oldsmobile, dating from , but the approach was developed and applied on a much larger scale with the Model T. The Ford was technically ingenious more about this later , and from the outset, was deliberately constructed of durable, strong materials, to make it last.

The Model T was typical of cars of its era in having a separate chassis frame on which the bodywork was mounted a wide range of body styles was produced over the years. This aspect was important in the early days of motoring, especially in remote country districts of the U. For its time the car was introduced in the engine was advanced, since many production motors of this era had individually-cast cylinders and non-detachable cylinder heads. This motor developed approximately 20 bhp and drove the rear wheels via a two speed plus reverse epicyclic or planetary type gearbox, with which the engine oil was shared.

After attending one-room public schools during the winter months from to , Ford was barely proficient in reading and writing from the McGuffey readers, but he excelled in arithmetic. He was fascinated by machinery. On 1 December Ford walked to Detroit to seek employment as a mechanic. He was assigned to the engine shop, where he acquired excellent hands-on knowledge of various types of power plants.
