Remember Evolve , the 4v1 multiplayer shooter about hunting down giant, human-controlled monsters? Player numbers dwindled soon after its release, and later that year developer Turtle Rock Studios ended support for the game. Now, publisher 2K Games has announced that it plans to pull the plug on a number of its key features. In September, dedicated servers will stop running, which means no more ranked play, no more leaderboards, and no more in-game store.
At the same time, Evolve Stage 2 —the free-to-play branch of the game—will shut down entirely. Players will keep any DLC content they’ve paid for, such as monsters, skins, and hunters.
I went into my review of Turtle Rock’s Evolve questioning how Nest, Rescue, Defend, and Evacuation – which combines the four previous if someone bounces from the matchmaking lobby, then the whole party is bounced.
I also knew I would spend more time on tactical actions than head-on combat. Quick aside: We benchmarked Evolve here , for those curious about which video cards are best for the game. Evolve is an asymmetrical hybrid of first-person shooter, MOBA, and first-person action elements, reminiscent of Left 4 Dead. The game pits four role-specific Hunters against a powerful Monster that can exploit the surrounding wildlife to gain armor and evolve into a stronger opponent.
Players compete in five modes, including Hunt, Nest, Rescue, Defend, and Evacuation — which combines the four previous mode into a five-part mode. Evolve runs as a single player offline experience and online as PVP. For each round, the player selects his class — Assault, Support, Medic, Trapper, or one of the Monsters — and between rounds, if in the same party, the player can choose his class preferences so that he can potentially switch from Assault to Medic or Trapper to the Monster.
This ability encourages people to stay in their given party and try out the different classes with each other; however, at least based on my week-1 experience, if someone bounces from the matchmaking lobby, then the whole party is bounced. Characters in the same class will have different weapons and abilities, but their core roles will be the same.
Evolve shutting down dedicated servers and free-to-play branch in September

‘Evolve’ Patch Improves Xbox One Matchmaking. Turtle Rock Turtle Rock reveals a new ‘Evolve’ game mode known as Evacuation. A new campaign of sorts.
The recent alpha preview did it few favours, crippled by broken matchmaking and offering a confusing and unbalanced game of cats ganging up against a rather large mouse. I spent almost every match during the alpha just walking through forests not doing anything of any interest whatsoever. Combine that with one of the most misguided, muddled and overly verbose pre-release content campaigns in history, and Evolve isn’t off to the best of starts.
What Turtle Rock’s shooter actually offers is far simpler than this befuddling maelstrom of bad information and tedious buzzwords sought to represent. It’s a game about four players shooting a monster. It just so happens to be a monster that’s controlled by another human.

Four scrappy hunters versus one super powered beast. The perpetuation of hunting as a pastime is in itself a validation of the design philosophy of the game; the thrill of the hunt is one that has scarcely been captured in video games before, much less in the hairtrigger realm of the multiplayer shooter. However, a hunt is only as thrilling as its prey and therein lies the big question: Is the balance there? Can one monster truly hope to defeat four hunters? The quick answer is no. Personally, I came to loathe playing any of the three beasts; what had at one point been a major selling point of Evolve all too often became a justification to put the controller down.
Evolve review for Xbox One, PS4, PC
Beyond that, the Evolve Stage 2 free-to-play version that replaced the original on PC in to boost dwindling player numbers will cease being available as well. Turtle Rock Studio’s original retail version of the game will return on all platforms sporting the name Legacy Evolve , bringing across all purchased monsters, hunters, and skins. Set on the planet Shear, humans were attempting colonization when they were attacked by large monsters. Playing as the Monster can be fun and the tutorial at the start of the game is a good way to get up to speed but you should really play solo first.
The Assault class is your standard grunt, heavy on the guns and offense. The Medic is essential to keeping the group healthy and fighting with things like a health regeneration beam or even the ability to bring people back from the dead. The Support class can shield Hunters, call down aerial bombardments and more. Speaking of which, one of the highlights of the game is that everything is available to a solo player.

‘Evolve’ impressions: Being a monster is really hard
Surrounding the player in just the right amount of chaos is a tricky task. If things get too hectic then all sense of being in control is lost and the player will no doubt feel frustrated as a result. If a developer gets it right though, controlled chaos can be a wonderful thing. Titanfall creators Respawn managed to achieve this perfectly — the AI soldiers running amok made the battlefields feel suitably busy.
Their presence never affected the chances of survival as they were little more than cannon fodder.
I played through one cycle of Evolve’s Evacuation mode—a five-round However, the moment I jumped back into online matchmaking, I was.
The hunt is the core experience, and matches are intense and calculated experiences with the right Hunter team and a cunning Monster. Likewise, playing as a Monster comes with its own sense of power. It is, in fact, extremely well-balanced, and aside from the Wraith a stealthy monster with high DPS potential that seems immensely powerful in comparison to the other two , Evolve juggles its variety with ease. Given the design and uniqueness of the setting, the lack of any meaningful story or details is a sore oversight.
These problems are surmountable if Turtle Rock takes heed. Should I fault the game because it fails to reward mediocre play? Like a Hunter who leaves the group to recon the map solo, those going into Evolve alone may find that the risks far outweigh the rewards. Reading Review: Evolve. Share Tweet. Review: Evolve.
